At first glance, the works of Rashawn Griffin could appear to be paintings, but in reality, their forms are the negation of a picture. Frames, stretchers, supports, Plexiglas, graphic or pictorial elements, collages of images, trashy or otherwise, subtle embroidery that is poetic and delicately feminine, brightly coloured stretch fabrics from markets in the third world, broaches, stiff wires, falling flowers, veils and nets in which even insects remain entangled. Or stretched walls of dark felt in blue, black and brown, punctuated by large cautionary letters that reveal poetic memories.
